Darlene Simons is our Minister of Church Counseling. While Darlene was born in Savannah, Georgia, she was raised in southwest Shreveport and was an active member of Summer Grove Baptist Church for most of her childhood and teenage years. In 1989 Darlene received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Louisiana Tech University. In 1998 she received a Masters of Education in School Administration from Centenary College. Darlene recently retired from public education after 24 years in Caddo Parish Public Schools. She taught at the elementary and middle school levels for a number of years prior to serving as an assistant principal and principal of Northwood High School.
Darlene is married to her husband Jay Simons. Jay is the service manager at Stuart’s Inc. Jay and Darlene were married in 1994 and have two daughters, Heather (21) and Savannah (18). Jay and Darlene serve in the Young Professionals class and have adopted them as their extended family.
Darlene felt God’s call to full time ministry after returning from a mission trip to India in the spring of 2014. The purpose of this mission was to share Jesus with widows and daughters of widows who were being forced into prostitution or sex trafficking. She surrendered to the ministry with a passion to help hurting people find healing and restoration in Jesus from the struggles life brings. With this passion for helping others, Darlene began to study and prepare for what God laid upon her heart. In 2017, she received Certification in Biblical Counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Darlene is excited to see God at work in the lives of others through the counseling ministry of Cypress Baptist Church.
